Our Head Roaster (Brandt) loves great coffee but only a select few bring him a similar level of joy to that which he gets from his pet turtle. We are stoked to announce that this coffee is one of those select few. We don’t fully understand what characteristics a coffee must have in order to bring Brandt pure joy, but we do know that this coffee is incredibly complex and a showstopper--So enjoy!
Located in Nyamasheke district of the Western province, the Gatare Washing Station is surrounded by hills covered by coffee trees and is a short distance to the southeastern tip of Lake Kivu. Rwanda is home to some of the best coffee growing conditions in the world thanks to high altitude, regular rainfall, and volcanic soils.
The vast majority of Rwandan coffee is produced by smallholders of which there are thought to be around half a million with parcels of land often not much larger than just one hectare per family. Rwandan smallholders organize themselves into cooperatives and share the services of centralized washing stations.
Gatare is one the oldest washing stations in the country, dating back to 2003 and it has a long reputation having been among the first stations to process very high quality coffee for export. The Station has competed in the Cup Of Excellence competition many times, and has always ended in the high winning lots. Y’all are in for a real treat, and we hope this coffee brings a bit of joy in your life too!
